The Better Portion: Choosing Presence Over Performance

“Only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken from her.”
Luke 10:42

A father took his two children to a fair. One dashed off to win prizes—stuffed animals, toys, snacks. The other stayed close—walking beside him, laughing, and talking. At the end of the day, one child had prizes that would soon fade; the other had something lasting: time with her father, memories, and closeness.

In Luke 10:38–42, Martha was preoccupied with many things, but Mary “chose the better portion”—to be present with Jesus. Like the child who stayed close to her father rather than chasing distractions, Mary understood that true treasure is not in what we accomplish, but in who we sit with. Jesus invites us into that kind of closeness: not just to serve Him, but to know Him, to walk with Him, to listen. Our lives may be filled with noise and demands, but only one thing is necessary—His presence. And unlike prizes or tasks, that can never be taken away.

Let your deepest pursuit be His presence.
In choosing Him, you receive the gift that never fades.

A Journey of Reflection and Action

As you reflect on today’s message, take a few intentional steps to draw nearer to Christ. Set aside ten quiet minutes to journal about what distracts you from simply being with Jesus. Meditate on Luke 10:38–42, allowing the scene to unfold in your heart. Ask: What would it look like today to choose the “better portion”? Share the story with a friend or small group and discuss how presence can be more powerful than performance. Throughout the week, resist the urge to rush through tasks—practice sitting still in prayer, walking in nature with God, or simply breathing deeply in His presence.

Join Us in Prayer

Lord Jesus,
In a world of noise and busyness, help me choose what truly matters—Your presence. Like Mary, teach me to sit at Your feet, listen to Your voice, and treasure moments with You above all else. Strip away the distractions, and draw my heart back to You. May my deepest pursuit be not what I do for You, but being with You. In choosing You, may I receive the peace, joy, and love that never fades.
Amen.
