“Be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.”
– Matthew 10:16
A pediatric ER nurse kneels to treat a gang member’s injured son, meeting the boy at eye-level.
“I need you to be brave like your dad,” she says softly while cleaning his wound. Then she turns to the scowling father and adds, “And you—be gentle like your boy.”
The tension breaks. A few hours later, the man returns alone, asking about job training at the clinic.
Jesus’ words, “wise as serpents, innocent as doves” (Matthew 10:16), show how God wants us to work in tough, unfriendly places. Like the nurse who calmed a tense moment with both strength and kindness, we’re called to face the world with smart thinking and soft hearts.
This balance only works because of Jesus’ promise: “It is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father” (v.20).
When we face stress at work or conflict in culture, we’re not left to figure it out alone. God’s Spirit helps us stay steady—bold in truth, gentle in love.
Ask the Spirit today: Make me wise when needed, gentle where called—and fill every gap with Your grace.
A Journey of Reflection and Action
Spend time meditating on Matthew 10:16 and verse 20. Journal about a situation where you needed both wisdom and gentleness—how did you respond, and how might you respond differently now with the Spirit’s help? Reflect on someone you encounter who may feel like an “outsider” or come from a harsh background—how can your kindness be a bridge to God’s grace? Consider sharing today’s message with a small group or posting it online to encourage others. Ask the Holy Spirit daily to fill you with both courage and compassion as you step into your world as Christ’s representative.
