“Follow me, and leave the dead to bury their own dead.”
– Matthew 8:22 –
A star athlete stands at the championship awards ceremony, trophy in hand, when his coach pulls him aside: “The Olympic trials conflict with your sister’s wedding—you’ll have to choose.”
The crowd cheers as he hesitates, realizing even golden opportunities can become distractions from what matters most.
Jesus’ invitation in Matthew 8:22 forces us to choose between what is good and what is God.
Not every obligation, celebration, or applause aligns with His call.
Obedience may require letting go of things others praise.
Like the athlete choosing between a medal and a milestone, we’re forced to confront what we truly value.
The Lord doesn’t reject family bonds—He reorders them.
When He says “Follow Me,” it means now—not after we tidy up our priorities.
If your faith costs you nothing, it may not be obedience.
What is your “trophy”—approval, security, or tradition—that Jesus asks you to release?
His call is urgent, His reward eternal.
Walk away from what glitters to grasp what truly lasts.
A Journey of Reflection and Action
Take 10–15 minutes this week to journal what “trophies” you may be holding—goals, expectations, or cultural obligations—that may be competing with God’s call on your life. Reflect on Matthew 8:22 and ask in prayer: “Lord, what am I choosing over You?” Share this reflection with a trusted friend or in your faith group. You could also write a short letter to Jesus surrendering one “medal” for His mission. Let this week be marked by one small but bold act of obedience—no matter how countercultural it may feel.

Lord Jesus, help me discern between what is good and what is truly of You. Give me the courage to let go of what distracts me—even if it shines. Teach me to obey, not only when it’s easy, but when it costs me comfort, applause, or tradition. Reorder my heart so that I follow You now, not later. In Your name, Amen.
