Seek first the kingdom of God

“Seek first the kingdom of God,… and all these things will be added…”
— Matthew 6:33 —

David had a big exam looming. He spent all his time stressing over what outfit to wear, the perfect pair of shoes, the right perfume, and who he’d sit with. His study notes sat largely untouched. When the exam day arrived, David realized his focus had been entirely on trivial things, and he had completely missed preparing for the main point.

It’s easy to get caught up in daily worries—what we’ll eat, wear, or how we’ll get by. Like David focused on everything but the exam, these anxieties distract us from what truly matters. Jesus warns, “You cannot serve God and mammon” (Matt 6:24), highlighting that we often serve worldly concerns instead of God. The challenge is to trust that when we “seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness,” (Matt 6:33) He will provide. This isn’t about ignoring responsibilities, but shifting our ultimate reliance and focus. Realign your priorities today: put God first, and watch His abundant provision unfold in your life.

A Journey of Reflection and Action

After reading this reflection, take time to pause and assess the areas of your life where anxiety may be crowding out faith. Start by journaling what you tend to worry about most, then write down Matthew 6:33 and meditate on it for 5 minutes daily this week. Look for moments where you can intentionally shift your focus from worldly concerns to spiritual ones—perhaps during your commute, before bed, or while doing chores. Share this reflection with a friend or family member and discuss how you both can seek God first in practical ways. Finally, challenge yourself to trust God for one specific need this week, and watch how He responds.

Join Us in Prayer

Heavenly Father,
In the chaos of life and the noise of daily demands, we confess how easily we shift our focus from You to lesser things. Teach us to seek first Your Kingdom and trust that all else will follow. Help us resist the lure of worldly distractions and choose what matters most—Your will, Your presence, and Your righteousness. When anxiety tempts us, remind us of Your faithfulness. May our hearts be centered on You, and may our lives reflect the peace that comes from trusting in Your provision. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
