Choosing Grace Over Retaliation: Living Matthew 5:39

“If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other.”Matthew 5:39

A child was building a sandcastle on the beach, carefully shaping its towers and walls. Suddenly, another child ran by and accidentally knocked part of it down. Instead of getting angry, the first child paused, sighed, and quietly began to rebuild—perhaps even inviting the other to join—showing unexpected patience and grace.

Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 5:39, “Do not resist the one who is evil: but if one strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also,” challenges our instinct to retaliate. In a world quick to demand “an eye for an eye,” Jesus invites us to respond with radical love. This isn’t weakness—it’s strength that disarms conflict and reflects Christ’s transforming grace in everyday situations, from small disagreements to deep injustices. Choose peace, even when provoked. Your gentle response can transform moments of conflict into opportunities for grace and understanding.

A Journey of Reflection and Action

To deepen your response to this message, begin by journaling about a recent moment when you were tempted to retaliate—reflect on how a gentle answer might have changed the outcome. Meditate on Matthew 5:39 throughout the week, and ask God to give you grace in moments of irritation or injustice. Share this teaching with someone you trust, and talk together about practical ways to choose peace over pride. You can also read stories of forgiveness in Scripture, such as Joseph and his brothers (Genesis 50:20) or Stephen forgiving his attackers (Acts 7:60), to reinforce this spirit of grace. Finally, challenge yourself to intentionally respond with unexpected kindness in at least one situation this week.

Join Us in Prayer

Lord Jesus,
You have shown us a better way—to respond to hurt not with vengeance, but with grace. Help us when we are provoked to pause, breathe, and choose peace. Let our gentle responses reflect Your strength and transform conflict into healing. Fill us with the courage to love radically, forgive freely, and build bridges even when it’s hard. May our actions echo Your heart in this broken world.
Amen.
