“…if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.” – 2 Corinthians 5:17 –
There is a woman staring at her old tattoo, a reminder of a life she is ashamed of. In order to cover up the tattoo, she visits an artist who specializes in cover-ups. After the cover-up artists begin wiping it out, she weeps, not out of pain, but from relief: the past does not define her anymore.
The powerful truth of 2 Cor 5:17 is beautifully echoed in the act of a tattoo cover-up. Like the woman’s shameful tattoo, our past sins and mistakes can feel like permanent marks.
But when we come to Christ, He doesn’t erase our past; He covers it with His grace and transforms our identity.
The “old things”—the shame, the guilt, the definitions from our past—are covered by a vibrant new reality in Him. We are no longer defined by what was, but by who we are becoming, made new through His artistry and love. Let Christ be your Master Artist. Embrace His cover-up of grace, and walk free from a past that no longer defines you.
A Journey of Reflection and Action
Take time today to reflect on the areas of your life where old guilt, regret, or shame still cling. Write a journal entry titled “Covered by Grace,” listing moments from your past that you need to surrender to Christ’s redemptive work. Meditate on 2 Corinthians 5:17 and imagine Jesus, the Master Artist, covering each wound with His healing touch. Share this message with a friend or loved one who may need to hear it, or bring it up in your next group fellowship. Discuss how God’s grace transforms our identity and what it means to walk as a “new creation.”
