“What is that to you? You follow me.”- John 21:22 –

During a school sports day, a young girl in a sprint race kept glancing at the competitor next to her. Each glance slowed her down until she tripped and fell just before the finish line. Her coach said gently, “You lost because you stopped running your own race.”

Jesus’ words to Peter cut to the heart of our spiritual stumbles: “What’s that to you?” ( John 21:22 )
Like the young runner, we often falter when we obsess over others’ paths – their blessings, their struggles, their calling. But discipleship isn’t about comparison; it’s about keeping our eyes fixed on Christ and running the race marked out for us (Hebrews 12:1-2). When you’re tempted to look sideways, hear Jesus say: “You – follow ME.” Your race, your calling, your path with Him is uniquely yours – run it with your whole heart.

A Journey of Reflection and Action

After reading and reflecting on this message, take some intentional steps to anchor this truth in your daily life. Begin by journaling moments when you’ve compared your journey to someone else’s and how that affected your spiritual walk. Then, meditate on John 21:22 and Hebrews 12:1-2 throughout the week, asking God to refocus your eyes on Him. Consider sharing this message with a friend or a small group, and discuss ways each person can remain faithful in their unique calling. Finally, set a daily reminder to start your day with the words: “You – follow ME,” letting that guide your actions, decisions, and thoughts.
